Many people when picturing their dream closet picture a beautiful island in the center, but many aren’t sure just how much space you need for one. So this week we’ll be answering the question, do I have enough space for a closet island? And, If I don’t have enough space, what can I do?
Here at The Closet Doctor, as a custom closet company, our goal is to be sure to give you a usable and functional space in your closet, we want something that you are going to love and that will serve you well.
Space for closet island
Generally, for an island, we need quite a bit of space for it to be accessible and usable. To do the quick math for how much space is needed for an island in a closet, hanging clothes take 24 inches, then 24-28 inches of walking space is needed, so essentially we need about 4 feet on each side of the island. Since generally, the minimum island size is 20″ x 30″, the bare minimum space needed for an island is usually about 116″ x 126″. That will give you a small island that is 20″ inches deep, ample walking and hanging space. So in order to accommodate at least a small island, you will need a room that is 9.5″ by 10.5″ feet, and then the larger of an island you would like, the larger the room will need to be.
But what if your room is just not big enough for an island? We still have solutions for you! Our most popular solution is our hutch system. It is essentially an island, up against the wall. You need much less space in a closet to accommodate a hutch and they still give you beautiful drawer, pull-out, and top options. Our customers love our hutch system because it offers easy closet access to the rest of your hanging and shelving. We generally do 24″ inch deep drawers, a 48″ wide top surface, and then shelving or cabinetry above. We can do anything from simple to luxury.
Some opt for simple finishes and shelving above, others opt for options like stone finish tops, mirrors, and glass inlaid doors. Often times you can actually get more usable space and storage than on an island while using up much less space in your closet.
