What Is a Murphy Bed System?
A Murphy bed, also called a wall bed, is a bed that is hinged on one side and is designed to fold upward. This enables the bed to be stored vertically into a cabinet or recess in the wall while the bed is not in use. When put away, the bed takes up minimal space (our Murphy wall beds only take up 16″!), and when the bed is needed it can be folded out with one touch.
Our experts can help you understand all the details of Murphy bed dimensions, what exactly makes up a wall bed, and how to pick the best option for your needs.

How Does a Murphy Bed Work?
A Murphy bed is hinged on one side and designed to fold upward. This enables the bed to be stored vertically into a cabinet or recess in the wall while the bed is not in use. The mechanism that we use has adjustable springs that counter balance the weight of the mattress, making it easy to raise and lower the bed when needed.
Is a Murphy Bed Safe?
It’s very unlikely that a Murphy bed could seriously injure you. The biggest risk when using a Murphy bed is trapping your fingers when opening or closing it.
What Is the Difference Between a Murphy Bed and a Sleeper Sofa?
Murphy beds can be used with a top-quality mattress, which means you can sleep in them every day. A sofa bed is designed for sitting on and occasional use as a bed.
What Is the Difference Between a Vertical and Horizontal Murphy Bed?
Vertical Murphy Beds are popular because they look like regular beds when in the up position and can fold down from the ceiling. The queen vertical is the most popular wall bed by far at just 65.5″ inches in width. It fits in almost every room, allows easy access from both sides of the bed and looks great!
The side tilt murphy bed is wider than it is tall, with the mattress folding along the length of the bed. This gives you room in narrow spaces or rooms with low ceilings.
Side Tilt Murphy Beds are a perfect choice for rooms with low ceilings or a child’s bedroom. Because the bed is mounted sideways on a wall, you can only get into it from one side.
